PIREP Reliability in Preflight Decision Making
Evaluating how pilot reports complement METAR/TAF data in preflight risk assessment workflows.
METARs and TAFs anchor legal and practical weather decisions, but they are sparse in time and space. Pilot reports (PIREPs) fill gaps with recent, localized observations — turbulence, icing, cloud tops, and in-flight visibility. The challenge is integrating PIREPs without treating every report as equally representative or current.
Reliability varies by report type and age. Urgent icing PIREPs near your altitude band within the last hour are high value; vague ride reports from a different aircraft category fifty miles off route are lower value. ASRS filings also show that pilots sometimes misestimate cloud bases or icing severity under stress, which argues for corroboration rather than single-source trust.
Spatial relevance matters. A PIREP along your planned corridor within a reasonable time window should move personal minimums conversations; a report on the other side of a weather system should not automatically veto a departure. Good briefing practice clusters PIREPs by route segment and compares them to TAF trends — improving or deteriorating.
